Spotlight: Santa Fe University of Art & Design
01/03/2012Every year we have films submitted to NFFTY from young independent artists, taking a risk and making films that inspire. Often these projects are born from personal passion, and a vested interest in storytelling. And many times these talented young filmmakers are students too. Some of the best NFFTY submissions are a product of education programs: colleges, universities, and other workshops.
With this spotlight, we turn our focus to Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The Santa Fe University of Art and Design is a unique program that offers professional resources and creative expertise for budding filmmakers. Not only is it a community of artists who share their college experience, it’s also a major destination for large-scale film productions. The state of New Mexico has a very nice film incentive offering a 25% rebate to productions hosted in the state. Garison studios and Santa Fe have played host to Terminator Salvation, Marvel’s The Avengers, True Grit, AMC’s Breaking Bad, and Cowboys and Aliens.
Santa Fe is the home of Garison Studios, which is essentially “on-campus” at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design. This studio presence gives students the rare opportunity to be educated in the midst of professional productions. The university offers student internships, set-visits, master-classes, and even special effects demonstrations on-the-lot. From the start of your Freshman year you start making films, and there is a strong emphasis on “practicing the rhythm of filmmaking: from idea to execution.”

The Santa Fe University of Art & Design is committed to delivering a “quality college experience under the umbrella of the arts.” Add new dorms, study-abroad options (Including a sister school in New Zealand connected with WETA Digital, the esteemed VFX house behind Lord of the Rings & Avatar) an active student body with clubs and activities, and the Santa Fe University of Art & Design really stands out as a quality smaller arts university with a big presence in the film industry.
