The Social Network Finds Success At Box Office

The debut of The Social Network this past weekend exceeded studio expectations, earning $23 million in nearly 3,000 theaters to come out with the number one spot.  Directed by the highly-regarded David Fincher, the picture is loosely based on the life of Mark Zuckerberg, who himself has decided to not speak about the film publicly and who recently went on the Oprah Winfrey show to donate $100 million to education in what some called a publicity stunt. Regardless, its easy to see the film has received both critical and commercial success this past week and will continue to do so through the holiday season.

  1. Undeniably, Facebook is a relatively new product. But when we look at the platform and the integration of social networking (Web 2.0, as many call it) into our lives, I think that this becomes a relevant topic that should be discussed. The way we communicate is changing, just look at this Disqus technology on the NFFTY website. I didn’t register for a separate account, I simply used my Twitter log-in, just as you can use Facebook Connect on many sites.

    What is most interesting about THE SOCIAL NETWORK, however, is its perception among audiences. I got in a healthy debate with Brian Cuban about the relevance of the film. He saw the film as fun, disposable entertainment, not something that he would see again, while I believe that the generational shift in vernacular of the word “friend,” making social networks personal to millions, is just as powerful as the character Howard Beale in NETWORK, when he knows that he doesn’t exist to broadcast but to sell a product — now that simply exists with PCs.

    Regardless of Facebook’s longevity, Zuckerberg has changed the culture and our mindset. People have almost become re-programmed, just waiting for an update as he does at the end of the film. Because it accurately taps into this revolution, I think that the film is deserving of any accolades it receives.
