Little Big Show #3 – Get to Know: Craft Spells07/20/2012
Musical genres tend to run in cycles. Right now we’re living in a time where there is a lot of revivalist music claiming authenticity of older, familiar sounds. But there are always bands who breathe new life into genres that once felt dated. In the 1980s music was infused with drum sounds that could fill an arenas, synthesizers that looked like guitars (key-tars?), and lamenting vocals soaked in reverb. Many of the 1980s ballads a-la Simple Minds “Don’t You Forget About Me” get stuck on our own mental playlists, because they’re just that catchy.
Craft Spells is a band bringing new life to a new-wave, dance-pop genre that seemed perfected in the John Hughes era- but the band’s tight drumming, bass hooks, and clever guitar work adds a new modern spin, taking their sound well beyond the reminiscent 1980s Prom tunes.
