Godspeed

Sade Abiodun - 24, Jonathan Michala - 21, Michael J. Ivory - 23
New Jersey

Poetry, music, and visuals converge to lead us through the life of a Black girl as she becomes a Black woman. As she is forced to make sense of the dynamic tension between the child she was and the woman she will be, she draws strength from the one person who knows her best: her mother.

Godspeed screened during NFFTY 2020, as part of the Call Your Mother showcase.

Filmed decades apart on the same miniDV camcorder, TO KNOW HER is an poetic exploration of my family’s relationship with my mother, who passed away when I was 14 years old to clinical depression. Official Selection: Sundance Film Festival 2021 Winner: Sundance x Adobe Ignite Fellowship 2020 Directed, Written & Edited by Natalie A. Chao Cinematography by Natalie A. Chao & Stephanie A. Chao Original Score & Sound Mixing by Cheryl Chow Music Performed by John Russell, Jonah Sanchez, Jonathan Ricks
